Whitehall Salmon Report – May 17, 2026

Strong Early King Salmon Bite South of Whitehall

Whitehall salmon report for May 17, 2026 started out with a solid early morning setup south of Whitehall near Duck Lake on Lake Michigan. Conditions were pretty calm, and we had cooler water offshore along with a good speed range on the troll, which usually sets things up for a morning bite.

We set lines in about 100 feet of water and immediately started working through an area where we had a strong temp break around 80 feet — surface water was about 54°F dropping down into the mid-40s. At first, we didn’t move any fish right away. We kept working the spread and adjusting as we went, but things stayed quiet until we made a move west.

Once we pushed out to around 130 feet of water, everything changed. The program came alive and it was pretty much game on from there.

Early Bite on High and Low Diver Programs

Once we reached 130 feet of water, the bite quickly turned on. At that point, both high and low diver setups began firing on a consistent basis.

High divers were set back 130–150 feet using Dreamweaver 107mm Deeper Divers. Meanwhile, low divers were run at 100 feet with Dreamweaver 124mm Deeper Divers. Both programs were extremely productive, especially when paired with Magnum spoons.

In particular, the top-producing spoon patterns included Yeck Lures Bad Toad and 4 Eyes, which triggered multiple aggressive King Salmon strikes during the early morning period.

Copper Program Dominates as Sun Risescustomer with king salmon from Whitehall Michigan

As the sun began to break through the cloud cover, the fish shifted deeper and more offshore. Consequently, we moved into 140–160 feet of water to stay on active pods of fish.

At that point, long copper lines became the most effective presentation. The most productive setups included:

  • 250 copper
  • 275 copper
  • 300 copper
  • 325 copper

These were all run with Magnum spoons, and the best performing colors included Green Knight, 4 Eyes, and Blue Bad Toad.

Downriggers Hold Steady Mid-Morning Bite

Downriggers also contributed steady action throughout the morning. Specifically, rods set 50–75 feet down continued to fire consistently on Magnum spoons as fish moved through the spread.

Notably, trolling speed proved to be a key factor. Faster presentations at 2.8–3.1 mph triggered more aggressive bites, including multiple King Salmon hitting copper lines while they were being retrieved, confirming the fish were responding to higher speeds.
