If you’ve been following our Whitehall Michigan salmon fishing reports, you’ve probably noticed the fishing has slowed down compared to the excellent action we experienced throughout May. While there are still salmon being caught, we’re simply not seeing the numbers of silver fish that were around earlier in the season.
Before anyone gets discouraged, this is actually a very normal pattern for Lake Michigan salmon fishing out of Whitehall during mid-June.
Why Has the Salmon Fishing Slowed?
Every year around this time, baitfish begin transitioning toward inland waters as part of their spawning cycle. When that happens, the salmon along this stretch of Lake Michigan suddenly have less food available, causing them to spread out and become less aggressive.
The good news?
- Salmon are still being caught.
- There are still quality fish around.
- This is a seasonal pattern we see almost every year.
Fishing may be slower, but it’s far from over.
Lake Conditions Out of Whitehall
According to the White Lake buoy data available through the Seagull app:
Current Water Temperatures
- Surface Temperature: 64°F
- 60 Feet Down: 50°F
These temperature readings tell us the lake is beginning to set up for summer.
As stronger thermoclines develop, fish will become more concentrated at predictable depths, making it easier to locate active fish and maintain consistent catches.
What This Means for Anglers
- Fish will begin holding in more defined temperature bands.
- Trout fishing should continue improving.
- Salmon fishing should become more predictable as the lake stabilizes.
- Electronics and temperature data become increasingly important this time of year.
Trout Fishing Continues to Improve
While salmon fishing has been somewhat inconsistent, the Lake Michigan trout fishing out of Whitehall has been getting better every week.
As colder water becomes more established offshore, trout are settling into more predictable areas and are providing steady action for anglers willing to target them.
If current lake conditions continue, trout fishing should remain one of the brighter spots heading into late June.
June Winds Have Been Relentless
If you’ve spent any time on Lake Michigan this month, you’ve probably noticed one thing:
The wind just won’t quit.
Strong winds and constant weather changes have made fishing more challenging than normal. We’re all hoping for a stretch of calmer weather that allows the lake to settle and the fish to establish more predictable patterns.
Once that happens, fishing should improve considerably.
White Lake Inland Fishing Has Been Outstanding
While offshore fishing has been slower, the inland action around White Lake and Whitehall Michigan has been fantastic.
What’s Biting Right Now?
✅ Bluegill
✅ Crappie
✅ Largemouth Bass
✅ Northern Pike
✅ Bowfin
We’ve seen numerous limit catches of panfish, and the bass and pike fishing has been especially productive.
Where Are the Fish?
- Panfish are still holding around spawning areas.
- The spawn is beginning to slow down but remains productive.
- Bass and pike are relating to weed edges in approximately 8-12 feet of water.
- Spinnerbaits have been producing excellent results.
For families looking for steady action, inland trips have been hard to beat.
A Great Option During Windy Conditions
One advantage of fishing White Lake during windy weather is the ability to find protected shorelines and comfortable fishing conditions.
Unlike Lake Michigan, where wind can quickly limit fishing opportunities, inland anglers can often relocate and continue catching fish throughout the day.
That makes White Lake an excellent option for:
- Families with children
- Beginning anglers
- Anyone looking for consistent action
- Anglers wanting to escape rough Lake Michigan conditions
Looking Ahead
As we move deeper into June, we expect:
- More defined thermoclines to develop.
- Trout fishing to continue improving.
- Salmon fishing to become more consistent.
- Inland fishing to remain excellent.
While the Lake Michigan salmon bite isn’t as strong as it was in May, there are still fish to be caught and plenty of reasons to get on the water.
Whether you’re looking to chase salmon and trout offshore or enjoy incredible inland fishing for panfish, bass, and pike, there are still plenty of opportunities around Whitehall, White Lake, and the Lake Michigan shoreline.
